Lateral Stretch (Parighangasana variation)
Benefits: This side-stretching pose lengthens the muscles between the ribs and pelvis, including parts of the low back, and open the sides of the rib cage, improving rib cage mobility and the expansiveness of the lungs, which makes breathing easier in all situations This pose will make you feel revitalized and oxygenated. Also, the practice of this intense side stretch takes us beyond our daily lives, stretching our boundaries so that we can move past limitations.
Instruction: Start by coming to standing with your feet hip distant apart (for more support) or cross the right foot over the left. Inhale as you interlock your hands and reach your arms up to the sky. On your next exhale, lean over to left side, without collapsing your chest or arms over your head. Keeping your body parallel you should feel a stretch on your side. Keep your belly active and chin tucked into throat. Hold and breathe for 5-10 breaths before repeating to the other side.
Tip: Try not to lean forward or back to accomplish movement.
It’s time. Lets do it. Let’s lose those extra pounds and get toned in order to feel lighter and build confidence. Practicing any type of yoga will build strength, but some forms of the practice may not raise your heart rate enough to make them the only form of exercise you need to include in your weight loss regime. It depends on what type of yoga you choose to participate in, and how frequently you practice it.
